When the Speedy Wasn’t Speedy Enough

On a stormy night in October of 1804 the H.M.S. Speedy, an unseaworthy schooner disappeared before reaching “Newcastle”, actually the Brighton/Presqu’ile area of Ontario. The loss of several prominent individuals including several with Loyalist backgrounds ended plans to make that area the district capital.

Regina Branch received final permission from Wascana Centre Authority to proceed with construction of the Loyalist Cairn on the legislative precinct. It will be located north east of the legislative building between a walking path and the lake edge. Construction is planned to begin in September.

For the eighth year we have raised the Loyalist flag over Confederation Park across from City Hall on 12 June, which has been declared “Loyalist Day in Kingston” in perpetuity by council and the Proclamation goes in the Kingston Whig Standard ahead of time.
